Leopold Victor William Cox was born in Ovingham, Adelaide, South Australia, on July 21, 1896.[1] Leopold Victor William Cox parents were Margaret Jessie Bennear and Samuel William Cox, who worked as an agent.[2] Cox had three brothers (Frederick William George Cox, Henry Arthur James Cox, and Percy Harold Cox) and a sister (Elsie May Cox).[3] Prior to his enlistment in World War I, Leopold Victor William Cox moved from Adelaide, South Australia, to Woollahra, New South Wales, and attended Sydney Technical High School before working as a boots salesman.[4]
Leopold Victor William Cox enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the 16th of May 1915, signing the oath on 26th may 1915. He embarked from Sydney a month later aboard the HMAT A62 Wandilla on the 14th of June 1915 as part of the 13th infantry battalion.[5] Cox was enlisted as a private and fought in Gallipoli from August 2. He was admitted to hospital at Malta with a septic arm in August and rejoined his unti on 10th September 1915 . On the 23rd of October he was promoted to Temporary Corporal.[6]
After the evacuation of Gallipoli, on the 23rd of December, Cox was admitted to the hospital for 2 days for neurasthenia, which is a medical condition that can cause nervous exhaustion, agitation, irritability, and depression.[7]
After Gallipoli, Leopold Victor William Cox fought in France in 1916 and 1917. During this time in France, he was wounded with a guns shot wound to his head 7th August 1916 but he recovered and continued to serve rejoining his unit 11th September 1916.[8] Cox was promoted to Sergeant on September 16, 1916.[9] Cox also served in Belgium in 1916. Leopold Victor William Cox continued to serve in 1918, when his brother, Frederick William George Cox, passed away due to a sniper shot to the head while he was serving in France.[10]
Leopold Victor William Cox returned to Australia on April 5, 1919. Cox married Gladys Louisa Steer on September 16, 1922. They were married for 8 years, and during this time they had a child. However, on September 3, 1930, the marriage between Leopold Victor William Cox and Gladys Louisa Steer was pronounced dissolved due to Cox's desertion of Gladys.[12] In the decades following his military service, there is very little information about Cox's life, other than evidence that he was unemployed in 1949 but began working as a milliner in 1954.[13]
He passed away on March 12th, 1971, in Launceston, Tasmania, at the age of 74.[14]
