Private Robert Marshall Leishman (Service No:3397) enlisted in the AIF on 25 July 1915, and was attached to 7th Infantry Battalion on 11 October 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt on board HMAT A71 Nestor. Private Leishman then embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles with 59th Infantry Battalion on 18 June 1916 for service on the Western Front. WiA (GSW to arm and leg) in France on 24 April 1918, Private Leishman was invalided to England. Private Leishman was attached to 59th Infantry Battalion on 8 April 1919 when he embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Trasos Montes, and was Discharged on 15 July 1919.
Robert was born in Northumberland, England in 1893, only son of Thomas Leishman (b1857 in Northumberland, England) and Isabella Johnston (nee Marshall; b1862 in Northumberland, England). Thomas (a Commercial Clerk) and Isabella married in 1892 and lived with Isabella's widowed mother Margaret in Berwick, Northumberland until their deaths (Thomas in 1906 and Isabella in 1908).
Robert lived with his Grandmother (Margaret Marshall - a Licensed Victualler) in Berwick, Northumberland, wehre he was a Apprentice Baker. In 1913 Robert immigrated, travelling via Canada en route for Melbourne on board Hesperian, and lived with his Uncle - Captain Robert Nesbit Marshall - in Melbourne. Robert was working as a Baker in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF and, following his Discharge, returned to Melbourne where, in 1920 he married Jessie Hilda Jeffreson (b1890 in Melbourne, Victoria). Robert and Jessie lived with Jessie's parents in Brighton Beach in Melbourne, where they raised their son and Robert was a Manufacturer before declaring bankruptcy and returning to work as a Baker. Robert and Jessie were Divorced in 1929 - Robert worked as a Baker and died in 1964. Jessie died in 1976.
