George was the fourth of six children of William Alfred Rigby (born 1855 in Cheshire, England) and Julia Mitchell (born 1858 in Auckland, New Zealand). William immigrated to New Zealand in 1880 and worked for the South British Insurance Co. He married Julia in January 1885 at Kaikohe in the Bay of Islands, NZ. In 188 William and Julia and their two children transferred to Townsville, QLD where William was Manager of the South British Insurance Co, and in 1889 the family transferred to Brisbane, QLD.
George was a Clerk in Brisbane, QLD (for Shipping Agents Wills Gilchrist & Co) when he enlisted in the AIF in August 1914. He was serving with the QLD Militia 9th Infantry and was posted to the 9th Infantry Battalion (Private, Corporal, Sergeant; Service No:294) and Anzac Mounted Division in Gallipoli, where he was WiA in 1915. George was Discharged in December 1916. Brothers William (Jack) John Rigby (Lieutenant), and Gordon Alexander Rigby (Gunner, Service No:34643) served in WWI and brother Hubert Stanley Rigby (Lieutenant, Service No:QX6450) served in WWII.
George was living in Atherton, QLD and working as a Forestry Officer (Clerk) in 1922 when he married Edith Heather Huntington (born 1898 in Brisbane, QLD). Edith was a Clerk, and she and George settled in Brisbane, QLD and raised their family there. George worked as a Clerk. Edith died in 1960 and George in 1973.
