Son of John Simmons and Mary Ann Simmons nee Underwood of Yatala, Port Adelaide, SA.
Brother of Frances Evelyn Simmons, Florence Rose Simmons, Mary Ann Simmons, Isabell May Simmons, Henry Ernest Simmons, Harold George Simmons, Arthur Harold Simmons who returned to Australia on 29 May 1919 having served with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, Dorothy Olive Marjory Simmons and Arthur William Simmons,
On 20 November 1915 Alfred married Mabel Perry in the St Paul Church, Port Adelaide. Residential address at the time of enlistment was Victoria Street, Queenstown, SA
