Son of Joseph Sylvester Vial and Elizabeth Vial nee Cook of Sydney NSW. 

Brother of Claude Sylvester Vial who returned to Australia on 15 April 1918 having served with 21st Battalion.

Ernest had previously served for a short time before being discharge as medically unfit.

Husband of Mary Vial formerly Mitchell nee Paterson of Armidale Street, Abermain, NSW, Ernest and May married during 1903 in Wallsend

Commenced return to Australia on 2 January 1919 aboard HT Aeneas disembarking on 5 February 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney.
