Served during The Great War and 2nd World War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery. 

77 years ago today, on the 19th February 1945, Gunner and Private Charles Henry Burton Samphier, 13th Australian Field Artillery Brigade & 6th Garrison Battalion, Fort Scratchley, N.S.W. Reg No-10214 & Service No-N67970), labourer from Dudding Street, Singleton, New South Wales and 4 Bathurst Street, Singleton, N.S.W. and 80 Britannia Street, Umina Beach, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. CATHOLIC 2-59. 98.

No funeral or death notice located.

Born at East Dulwich, London, England on the 24th December 1890 to Charles Henry and Ann Jane Elizabeth Samphier; husband of Katie A Samphier nee ? (married ?, died 1942, sleeping here, or Merron Gladys Samphier nee ? (married ?, died 1968, Singleton, N.S.W. of 80 Britannia Street, Umina Beach, N.S.W.), Charles enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
 Name reported on Singleton's Roll of Honor.

Admitted to hospital 4.2.1916 (elbow, mild).

Charles returned home July 1916, being discharged medically unfit (double flat feet) on the 16th October 1916.

Mr. Samphier’s name has been inscribed on the Singleton & District War Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 29th November 1925, 566 names inscribed, 101 Honoured Dead), and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies on Charles’s white marble headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice during 2 World Wars.
