Son of Capt. Francis Alford, Priolo House, Charlton, England
"...2555 Private Edgar Stephen Alford, 3rd Battalion, of Balmain, NSW (originally of Charlton, Kent, England). A sailor before enlisting on 14 June 1915, Pte Alford embarked from Sydney on HMAT Runic on 9 August 1915 with the 8th Reinforcements. On 2 April 1916 he was taken on strength of the 45th Battalion, taking the regimental number 2555A, but on 3 August 1916 he transferred back to the 3rd Battalion. He was killed in action on 4 May 1917 in France, at the age of 27." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
