Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, have I been forgotten?

67 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 19th November 1954, Private Enoch John Goodwin, 54th Battalion (Reg No-3301), clerk (J. Ireland & Co. Pty Ltd., Newcastle, N.S.W.) of George Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales and 34 Rawson Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of three (Neville, Betty, Clyde), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 67. ANGLICAN 2-151. 67.

Born at North Waratah, New South Wales on the 2nd March 1887 (as Errick J) to Thomas and Sarah Ann Goodwin; husband of Ellen Mary Goodwin nee Millen (married 1920, Waratah, N.S.W., died 1939 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article135446261, sleeping here), Enoch enlisted August 1915 with the 2nd Battalion at Warwick Farm, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 19-20.7.1916 (GSW neck, fractured left arm, Battle of Fromelles).

Enoch was invalided home April 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 20th June 1917.

Mr. Goodwin’s name has been inscribed on the Tighes Hill Public School Honor Roll, Tighes Hill Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Messrs. J. Ireland Limited Roll of Honour (photo, 17 names inscribed in gold, 2 Fallen, unveiled date unknown, in storage at Maryville, N.S.W.) and the Tighes Hill Pride of Ferndale Lodge, No. 132 and 1845, G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at the Goodwin gravesite and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of Enoch’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Lest We Forget.

NOTE- I have located another 5 returned Diggers resting at Sandgate Cemetery who were invalided home after the Battle of Fromelles (19/20th July 1916) or were taken as a Prisoner of War.
