Patrick Anselm Makeham was one of five brothers from Korumburra, Victoria, to serve in the AIF. Their father had passed away 10 years before the war and their widowed mother seemed to own or manage the Korumburra Hotel.
Patrick’s brother Samuel Makeham served with the 8th Light Horse Regiment and was wounded in June 1915. His lower leg was badly damaged and he was returned to Australia shortly after.
1859 Sergeant Alick Francis Makeham served with the 5th Division Signal Company. He was mentioned in despatches during 1918 and was also badly gassed before he returned home in 1919.
5739 Private John William Makeham served with the 16th Battalion and was badly wounded in August 1917, a compound fracture of the tibia, and he was sent home as incapacitated shortly after.
The youngest of the five brothers, Robert Leo Makeham, enlisted as a private in the 29th Battalion and rose to the rank of Lieutenant with the 8th Machine Gun Company, before returning to Australia during 1919.
