Biography contributed by Helen Harmer

William Ernest Patterson Marks was born in Melbourne in 1892. He enlisted at Perth on the 8.9.14, aged 23 years 6 months. His occupation was clerk and his denomination Presbyterian. He was described as being 5 feet 4¼ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 33½-35½ inches, dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. Initially a private with Service number 104, he was appointed to the 16th Battalion C Company on the 16.10 1914. Two days later, he was promoted to Corporal. William embarked from Melbourne on A 40 Ceramic on the 22.12.14 and promoted to Lance sergeant on the 27.1.15. As his father was deceased, next of kin was his mother Elizabeth Marks of Alexander Rd Beaconsfield, then Loftus St, Leederville and later Angelo St, South Perth.

At Gallipoli, he was initially reported missing, then an enquiry held at Serapeum on 24.4.16 concluded that he died in action on the 2.5.15.  He is honoured with a Memorial at Lone Pine 51. Effects returned to his mother included comforters, a notebook, 2 handkerchiefs, 1 feather, a comb, postcards, photos, cards and 7 ½ d in a purse.
