Private Fred Deacon Carrington was the eldest son of the late Captain Carrington who for many years commanded the SS Coogee trading between Melbourne and Launceston. His father was killed aboard the Coogee when it collided with another ship in the Bass Straight on Christmas Day 1903. Young Fred Carrington was well known in Launceston, and was up till the time of his enlistment employed with the Tasmanian Woolgrowers' Agency Company Limited as clerk for about six years.

His younger brother, 850 Pte. Bevis Ody Carrington 52nd Battalion AIF, was killed in action 5 April 1918, aged 19.
