Peter Kavanagh - Wooroolin WW1 Honour Board
Kavanagh Peter – 4537 – 47th Battalion
Peter Cavanagh was born 29 Jun 1890, the first child of James and Bridget Kavanagh (both born in Ireland but married in Brisbane.) By 1913 Peter was working as a labourer in the Wooroolin district. The electoral rolls show his address as Charlestown.
Peter travelled to Brisbane and enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces on 7 Sep 1915 giving his mother Bridget Kavanagh of Sandgate, Qld as his NOK. He stood 5 feet 7 ½ ins in his socks and had a fair complexion with light brown hair and grey eyes. His distinguishing feature was a scar on under his right foot.
Peter was originally assigned to the 15th Battalion and his unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 31 January 1916.
By Apr 1916 Peter was in the 47th Battalion fighting in France. The 47th Battalion was raised in Egypt on 24 February 1916 as part of the "doubling" of the AIF. Approximately half of its new recruits were Gallipoli veterans from the 15th Battalion, and the other half, fresh reinforcements from Australia. The 47th entered the trenches of the Western Front for the first time on 3 July. It participated in its first major battle at Pozieres.
Peter was shipped to England as sick in Nov 1917 and returned in Australia in Mar 1918. Peter lived in the Sandgate area near his parents. He died in 1931 and is buried at Nudgee Cemetery.
The Wooroolin WW1 honour board was unveiled on 12 May 1923 with the names of soldiers from Wooroolin and of the fallen on 12 May 1923. It is sited in the Wooroolin Memorial Hall.
