Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

John Thomas Buckland was the son of John Thomas Buckland and Alice Maria Buckland, of Kogarah, New South Wales. He was known as ‘Jack’ Buckland to his family and friends.

His older brother 499 Private James Frederick Buckland, also of the 19th Battalion AIF, had been killed in action, 14 November 1916, aged 22.

Another brother, 961 Lance Corporal Charles Mason Buckland 4th Battalion AIF, joined up in 1914, was mentioned in despatches and was returned to Australia on 1914 leave during late 1918.

‘Jack’ Buckland fought through Pozieres with the 19th Battalion and was wounded in action on 14 November 1916, the same day as his brother was killed. He was evacuated to England with a gunshot wound to the leg. He rejoined the 19th Battalion in April 1917 before he was killed in action in Belgium.

“Buckland came from Kogarah. Informant states they both belonged to B Company. On 10-10-1917 the Battalion was at Zonnebeke in supports, at about 4.30pm a party of about 8, including Lieutenant Bartle, Informant, Buckland and another soldier named Mellings, were sitting down waiting to gout the trench, when a shell came over and burst among them, and instantly killed Buckland and Mellings. Buckland was very popular in the Company.” 606 Sgt. L.J. Carr B Company 19th Battalion.

(Other man killed was 1738 Lance Corporal John Landley Mellings 19th Battalion, KIA 10 October 1917.)

“About 22 years of age, fair complexion, medium build, known as Jack Buckland. Acted as Company Runner to B Company. He was a good man and I thought his work worthy of recommendation, but owing to his decease could not obtain decoration other than a posthumous V.C. which was not quite warranted. He was killed by a whizz-bang shell death being instantaneous, the top of his head being blown off. He was buried on the spot but cannot give location not being in possession of a map.” Lieutenant J.C. Browning OC B Company, 19th Battalion.
