Joseph William BERRIMAN, (Service Number 1513) was born near Bristol, UK, on 8 September 1896. In early 1914 he was employed by the NSW Railways as a junior porter at Sydney. At the end of that year he was given leave to join the Expeditionary Forces.
He was killed in action at the Dardanelles on 2 July 1915. For a time, his family held out hope that there had been some mistake made as the telegram advising of his death quoted the regimental number 1413, while Berriman was 1513.
The army replied to a hand-written letter from the father, asserting that there was no doubt that the dead man was his son. He is buried in the Beach Cemetery, at the southern point of Anzac Cove.

Biography contributed by Faithe Jones
Corporal J.W. Berriman, killed at the Dardanelles, born at Briston, came to Australia with his parents three years ago. He was for some time employed with Goodlet and Smith Ltd., at Pyrmont, and resigned from there to join the railway service, his first appointment beint to Punchbowl, where his parents reside. He always took a keen interest in military matters, and enlisted at the end of last year, sailing for Egypt with the 3rd Reinforcements of the 13the Battalion on February 11. His parents have just received a letter from his chum giving details of his death, which occurred on July 2 at 10.30 am. he having only just a few minutes before been called out for duty. He was struck which shrapnel, one pice entering his neck and another his body. He was intrerred in the church of England Cemetery near the landing. The letter mentions that his death caused the deepest regret among members of the 13th Battalion, young Berriman being the youngest and most popular with both officers and men.
