Private Alfred Ernest Crawford (Service No:2050) enlisted in the AIF at Claremont, Tasmania on 24 May 1916 and was attached to 40th Infantry Battalion on 23 September 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Portsmouth on board HMAT A49 Seang Choong. Private Crawford fought in France with 40th and 12th Infantry Battalions and in 1917 was evacuated to England where he was hospitalised with Trench Fever.  Private Crawford embarked from England for Melbourne on 16 June 1919 on board HT Ormonde and was attached to 12th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 26 September 1919.

Ern was born in Launceston, Tasmania in 1884, second of eight children of Thomas Peter Crawford (b1858 in Franklin, Tasmania) and Mary Ann Smith (b1861 in Launceston, Tasmania). Thomas (a Labourer) and Mary married in 1881 in Launceston and settled at Upper Pipers River, Launceston where they raised their family and Thomas was a Farmer. Thomas died in 1937 and Mary in 1939.

Ern was a Tram Conductor in 1906 in Beaconsfield when he married Louise Elizabeth Mercer (b1899 in LaTrobe, Tasmania). Ern and Louisa were living in Launceston with their two sons and Ern was a Tram Conductor in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. Louisa moved to Melbourne with the children during Ern's service overseas, and would not return to Tasmania. Following their divorce in 1921, Ern had custody of the children and was working in Launceston as a Motorman in 1921 when he married Ida Mary Lyndon (b1894 in Oatlands, Tasmania) - Ida was Draper's Assistant in Wilmot. Ern and Ida settled in Launceston, where Ern died in 1964 and Ida in 1984.
