Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

The son of Mary Ann Grose, of 43 Peel St., North Ballarat, Victoria.

The following extract is from a letter written by Private Cyril Bryant of the 8th Battalion, a Peel Street neighbour of the Grose family, "We have been in two big engagements, and I am thankful to say I have come through safely so far, but we have lost some of our Ballarat boys. Corp. Joe Grose was killed in the trenches beside me. Poor lad, he never spoke.”

Corporal Joseph Donald Grose was 24 years of age when he was killed, his father having died while he was on his way to Egypt. He was born at Gordon, and was employed as a fitter at Munro's agricultural machinery works in Ballarat.

His younger brother, 1949 Private Percy Claude Grose 46th Battalion AIF, was killed at Pozieres 12 August 1916, age 19.
