Patrick was hospitalised several times with illness whilst serving and had his right thumb amputated. He returned to Australia 21 May 1916 and was discharged as medically unfit 16 August 1916.
After the war he worked in shearing sheds throughout Queensland, with addresses recorded at Blackall, Richmond, Dynevor Downs, Cunnamulla, Yamutta and North Comongin, Quilpie between 1926 and 1952. In 1939 he was in Toowoomba.
