69 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 13th October 1952, Private William Thomas Fairhall, also known as Snowy, 32nd Battalion (Reg No-2580), labourer from 42 King Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and Jones Avenue, Warners Bay, N.S.W., father of five (Ray, Victor, Allan, Betty, Daphne), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. METHODIST 4-08. 61.

Born at Croydon, New South Wales on the 9th April 1899 to Thomas and Ada Annie Fairhall of 28 Sidney Street, Newcastle, N.S.W.; husband of Florence May Fairhall nee Durham (married 1922, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1976, 24 years a widow, sleeping here), Snowy enlisted July 1916 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W. (stated age 19 years, 3 months, actual age 17 years, 3 months!)

Admitted to hospital 4.2.1917 (influenza), 10.1.1918 (influenza and trench fever or enteric (typhoid) fever), 13.2.1918 (trench fever).

Admitted to ship's hospital 4.8.1919 (boils).
Snowy returned home fit and well August 1919, being discharged on the 28th September 1919.

Mr. Fairhall’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not located inscribed on any other War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Snowy’s gravesite in remembrance of his service with the 1st A.I.F.
