Gunner Joseph Gallagher (Service Nos: WWI 21223, WWII Q303736), an Australian who served in both World Wars, is among almost 800 previously unmarked WWI veterans’ graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now honoured with a plaque recognising their service for Australia.
On 23 September 2023, his plaque was unveiled in Lutwyche Cemetery, along with a further 300 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:

Joseph Gallagher was born on 28 October 1892 in Castlederg, County Tyrone, Ireland to James Gallagher and Eliza Gallagher (nee Denniston) and emigrated to Australia in 1912. In January 1916 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Brisbane, stating his age as 21, his occupation as bootmaker and naming his father James in Ireland as his next of kin. On 11 May 1916, he embarked for overseas service from Sydney onboard HMAT Argyllshire and disembarked at Devonport England on 10 July 1916. In late December he proceeded to France. From April 1917 until his return to Australia he was admitted to hospital on several occasions suffering from sickness and synovitis of the right knee.
In early 1919, Joseph returned to Australia on the troopship HMAT Borda which arrived in Australia in May, and was discharged from the AIF on 18 August 1919.
When war again broke out, and despite being in his late forties, he enlisted at Gaythorne, Queensland, joining the 5th Ordnance Stores Company of the Australian Military Forces. He named his wife Mildred as next of kin. As a Private, he helped manage and distribute military stores and equipment vital to supporting Australia’s wartime operations across the Pacific.
Gunner Joseph Gallagher died on 27 April 1955, aged 62, and was buried in Anzac Portion 8, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.
After seven decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
