Robert was taken on strength of the 21st Field Artillery Brigade on 15 May 1916. He was severely wounded by shell fragments on 27 July 1916 during the fiercest of bombardments near Pozieres.

He reached the Liverpool Merchants Hospital in Etaples, France but died of his wounds two days later.

His brother, 609 Bombardier Claude William Jackson 36th Australian Heavy Artillery Group, was later killed in action in Belgium on 4 October 1917.

His parents were Samuel and Harriet Jackson of Coogee, New South Wales.
