William Stanley Notman enlisted in the AIF at Keswick, SA on 23 March 1915 aged 25. He embarked for Egypt on 31 May, where he joined the transport details for several months, and was finally taken on strength of the 7th Field Ambulance on 16 January 1916.
He departed Egypt on 29 March and arrived in Marseilles on 3 April 1916, where he remained on duty at the 2nd Division Base Depot until 7 December 1916, when he re-joined his unit.
He was transferred to the 2nd Division Headquarters on 8 February 1917, most likely in a transport role, where he spent the next 14 months and probably saw action during the Battle of Third Ypres during September – October 1917.
He finally re-joined the 7th Field Ambulance in France on 30 April 1918 and saw further action in August – September 1918 during the allies’ Somme offensive.
He left France on 8 January 1919 and departed England for Australia on 19 February.
He disembarked in Melbourne on 7 April, where he was formally discharged from the AIF on 6 June 1919.
