Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

John Flemming, known as ‘Jack’ was one of two sons of Robert and Mary Ann Flemming, of Elliott, Tasmania, who lost their lives in WW1.

Jack Flemming was killed during the 51st Battalion’s attack on Norieul on the morning of 2 April 1917. Some 47 members of the Battalion died on this day. Jack was originally buried in a small cemetery near Norieul. His remains, as well as thirteen other soldiers of the were removed to the H A C Cemetery after the war. As it was impossible to identify the individual graves the 14 soldiers were buried in a special collective grave and their memories perpetuated by means of ‘Special Memorials”

His younger brother, 194 Pte. Alfred Claude Matthew Flemming, also of the 51st Battalion AIF, later in the year died of wounds in England.
