Sydney was the eldest of five children of John Finn Donovan (b1866 in Creswick, Victoria) and Ellen Jane Arneich-Sumich (b1870 in Shepparton, Victoria). John (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1890 in Numurkah, Victoria where they lived before moving to Melbourne then on to Bunbury in WA by 1899. The family later moved to Perth, WA.

Sydney was a Labourer in Perth WA in November 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:7240). He served in France with 11th Infantry Battalion and 4th Machine Gun Battalion and was hospitalised with Trench Fever and Gas Poisoning. Sydney was Discharged in February 1919.

In 1917 Sydney married Hilda May Towton (b1895 in Perth, WA) and following his Discharge he and Hilda settled in Perth, where he waorked as a Labourer. Hilda died in 1943 and Sydney in 1962.
