LIEUT. C. H. KAEPPEL.
A private cable message was received in Sydney yesterday intimating that Lieutenant Carl Henry Kaeppel (18th Battalion) has been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry on the field.
Lieutenant Kaeppel, who was born at Mittagong, and is 29 years of age, was educated at the Sydney Grammar School and Sydney University. He had a brilliant career at the university, where, in addition to graduating B.A., he gained the Cooper scholarship, which
entitled him to go to Oxford. He was, however, in ill-health at the time, and decided not to leave Sydney.
After leaving the university he was appointed classical and sports
master at the Church of England Grammar School, North Sydney. He held that position for a number of years, and then went as master to the Armldale School, Armidale. Lieutenant Kaeppel left Armidale in January last to enlist, and sailed from Sydney in the middle of March.
