Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
Cuthbert Peniston BIRD (Service Number 588) was born on 16 November 1891 at Bungy, Suffolk, England. He became a casual tram conductor in Sydney in February 1913 and was made a permanent employee a year later. Very soon after the outbreak if the Great War he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.
He embarked from Australia on 22 December 1914 on HMAT ‘Ulysses’.
He was killed in action at the Dardanelles on 1 May 1915, only a few days after the landing. The circumstances are not recorded, and his body was never recovered.
His name is recorded on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
