William Henry Boughen was an Australian soldier, born on June 30, 1886, in Glanville, South Australia. He was the son of George Boughen and Mary Louisa Boughen nee Cox. He grew up in Aldinga, South Australia, alongside his three sisters, Emma Frances Lucy, Doris Stella, and Valeska Asenath Boughen. His religious denomination was Methodist, which he recorded in his enlistment papers. Before enlisting for the war, he worked as a Railway Porter for the South Australian Railways. In his Attestation paper, he listed his mother as his next of kin since he was unmarried at the time.
On 12 August 1915, Boughen enlisted for the war at the age of 29 years in Adelaide, South Australia. His standing height was 5 feet and 11 inches, his chest measurements was 38-40 inches, and his weight was 178 lbs. According to his attestation documents, he had brown hair and brown eyes, and a medium complexion.
He embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Borda A30, on 12 January 1916 from Adelaide and disembarked in Egypt. He proceeded to France 23rd July 1916 and was wounded the next month on the 26th August 1916, with a gunshot on his right knee. After initial treatment in France he was transferred England and ended up in the 3rd London General Hospital in Wandsworth to recover admitted on 7 September 1916. He was discharged to Perham Downs on 11 November 1916. He remained at the No 1 Command Depot unti he became ill with mumps in May 1917 and was hospitalised. He was discharged to duty 4th June 1917.
Boughen returned to France 17th November 1917 and was taken on strength with the 7th Field Ambulance. He spent a week in rest camp in August 1918 and was granted leave in November 1918 and he travelled to the UK.
Boughen returned to Australia on 2 June 1919. He was aboard the HT Beltana, disembarking on 2 July 1919. He married Evelyn Maude Berriman in St. Aidan’s Church, Saddleworth, South Australia. He later became the father of Ross Boughen.
William Boughen went on to live to the age of 87 and passed away on July 22, 1973, from natural causes in his family home. He was buried in Willaston Cemetery, South Australia, alongside his family members. His service and contribution to the war were recognised and commemorated through various memorials and tributes.
