Biography

"KALGOORLIE RECRUITING

At the Kalgoorlie recruiting office last month the number of volunteers examined was 183 and the rejecteds totalled 67. Three Russians have been enlisted lately, the last two, formerly workers on the woodlines, both having had previous military training in their fatherland.

The position is a curious one as regards the enlistment of allies in the Australian forces. This trio of Russians, the recruiting officer says, will fight with our men in kliaki, but it is impossible to enlist Italians under the same conditions simply because Italy has not yet declared war on Germany. Names of those who have been recruited are :— G. Bradford, F. B. Burrows, J. Clarke, J. B. Craig, J. E. Day, F. C. Edmonson, E. T. Hinscliff, A. E. Rice, J. T. Smith, W. A. Schiff. E. Taylor; J. Rrland, and W. D. Gorkoon, both the latter being of Russian nationality." - from the Kalgoorlie Miner 07 Dec 1915 (nla.gov.au)
