Biography
Herb is my wife's Grandfather on her Father's side of the family. Herb married Ellen Smith 21st September 1910 in Ballina. NSW. He was allocated a selection at Wondai which he was working. It was called "Sunnyside" but I have not been able to find any trace of it through the local council at Kingaroy. Herb and Ellen's first child was born on the 31st of October 1911. He was named George Herbert Auliff.
Herb signed up at the Wondai RSL and went into training at Thompson's Paddock at Enoggera and embarked aboard the HMAT Commonwealth on the 28th March 1916. The officer in charge on board was Lt. George Henry Glencross SMITH along with Lt. Percival Gorman NEESON, Lt. James GLASGOW and Lt. Edward Francis TRUNDLE. Herb embarked for France from England on the 9th of August 1916. Herb sent a postcard to Ellen and Georgie when ever he got the opportunity as Ellen also sent postcards to him. One postcard told him that she was pregnant and had their second child on the 18th of November 1916. He was named James Trevor Auliff, my wife's father.
Herb was killed while his unit was advancing on the 22nd of March 1917. The timing of James Trevor's birth was just right or I would not have the beautiful wife and family I have today. - Frank Rae ( [email protected] )
