Frederick Dorling (Adolph Frederik Louin Dorling) was born 14 August 1888. He grew up living in Gawler and attended Gawler public school, graduating in 1900. His closest family consisted of his father Adolph Franz Anton Dorling, his mother Amelie Wikemina Fredrieka Schumacher, and his brother, Henry Dorling (who served as a gunner in WW1) and his sister Dorothea Dorling. Before he enlisted, he worked as a labourer. He and his family were also Christians and members of the Church of England.
Dorling enlisted 28th of November 1914 and was in the unit of the 2nd Reinforcement 12th Battalion, and his rank was Private. He was 26 years old and single, he was described as 5”8 and weighed 150lbs/68kgs.
He embarked from Australia 2nd February 1915 and was taken on strength at Gallipoli in May.
In August he was admitted to hospital with Synovitis of the knee and then caught Mumps. He was returned to Australia invalided in April 1916 and was discharged.
Dorling reenlisted and served with the 8th Field Ambulance. He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A60 Aneas 30th October 1917. He served on the Western Front and in October 1918 he was admitted to hospital with influenza. He returned to Australia and was discharged 15th April 1919.
In 1928 he married Harriet Linda May Angus on 26th September 1928. Together they lived in the suburb of Edwardstown and Frederick worked as a painter.
Frederick Adolph Dorling served with dedication in the Australian Military Forces during World War II, enlisting on October 2, 1939, in Adelaide, South Australia. Holding the rank of Private, Dorling contributed to the war effort until his discharge on July 6, 1948
He lived to be 78 years old and passed away on the 17th of April 1967, at the Repatriation Hospital Daw Park, South Australia. He was buried in Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, South Australia.
