60 years ago today, on the 30th August 1965, Driver William John Crowsen, 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-400), labourer from 54 Berner Street, Merewether, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 71. ANGLICAN 1-61. 40.

Never married.

Born at Hartley Vale, New South Wales on the 28th December 1893 to William Henry Clement, died 14.1.1921, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 59, buried here, and Alice Crowsen, died 1.6.1952, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 87, 31 years a widow, mother of 6?, sleeping here, from 32 Berner Street, Merewether, New South Wales, William enlisted on the 18th July 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.

Disembarked Suez, Egypt 11.12.1915.

Taken on strength of the 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade 27.1.1917, France.

Wounded in action - 3.10.1918 (GSW left knee, slight).

Invalided to England 6.10.1918.

Admitted to hospital 13.11.1918 (influenza).

Commenced return to Australia 21.12.1918.

William was invalided home on the 4th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 27th April 1919.

Received all 3 War Medals.

Mr. Crowsen’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour and the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
