Son of Thomas Alfred Pettis and Margaret Pettis nee Leitch of Brunswick, Victoria. Brother of John Pettis, Kate Pettis, Lillian Maude Pettis, William Pettis and Thomas Pettis who was killed in action on 26 July 1916 while serving with the 1st Pioneer Battalion

Next of kin was given as his brother William Pettis
