Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
In Walter’s service file it is noted that he took part in a raid on the enemy trenches on the night of 29-30 June 1916. This raid was conducted by the four battalions in the 6th Brigade Australian Imperial Force to gather information for use by Intelligence staffs, and to introduce the Australians to such raids in trench warfare.
Walter was killed by artillery fire on the night of 29 July 1916 when carrying up rations to the front line at Pozieres through a communication trench.
Walter’s remains were found near Pozieres in 1927, identifiable by the presence of a wristlet watch, inscribed “From D.R.C. to W. Rieschieck 1915”. Walter’s parents, August and Henrietta Rieschieck, were informed in 1928, and the watch was returned to them at their residence in Balwyn, Victoria. “Unfortunately, as a result of long exposure, this memento is now beyond repair, but it is felt nevertheless that you will value it on account of it’s former intimate association with your son, and I trust same comes safely to hand.” Captain Lean, Base Records.
