Jack was the sixth of eight children of Henry (Harry) Griffiths (born 1853 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Louisa (Lucy) Elliott (born 1854 in Hobart Town, Tasmania. Harry was the son of Captain Henry Griffiths who traded between the Eastern States of Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. Harry 'followed the sea' for fifteen years prior to marrying Lucy in 1884 in Emu Bay, Tasmania. Harry and Lucy raised their family at Wynyard, where Harry was a Labourer.

Jack was an Assistant Storekeeper at Wynyard when he enlisted in the AIF in April 1917. He served as a Private (Service No:7495) with 12th Infantry Battalion 25th Reinforcements and 40th Infantry Battalion and was WIA on two occasions. Brothers Henry (Service No:1830) - KIA in November 1917 - and Mark (Service No:7205) also served in WWI. Brothers Mark (Service No:V14810), Sydney (Service No:T255831) and Reginald (Service No:126743) served in WWII.

Jack returned to Tasmania and was a Shopkeeper's Assistant at Wilmot when he married Ivy Monds Batten (born 1896 at Waratah in Tasmania) in 1924 at Ulverstone in Tasmania. Ivy was working as a Shop Assistant in Wynyard in 1919.

Jack and Ivy settled at Campbell Town in Wilmot, Tasmania where Jack was a Grocer. He died in 1956 and Ivy in 1987.
