Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

"Private Edmund Ramsden Lyall, who, at the time of his enlistment, was a junior teacher at School No. 40, Berwick, was killed in action somewhere in France on the 14th of November, 1916. He was the son of Mr. John S. Lyall, head teacher of School 1951, Jindivick. After attending elementary schools at Waubra and Jindivick, he became a student of the Warragul High School, and, on the completion of his course, received the appointment to Berwick.

He enlisted on the 20th of July, 1915, and embarked with the 7th Reinforcements to the 21st Battalion.

In Egypt, at Moascar, he was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion, and he went to France with this unit. He was killed in action on the 14th of November.

His commanding officer, Lieutenant Nevein, in a letter to his parents, wrote :

"Private Lyall was killed while trying to get communication through after a charge. He was killed instantly, suffering no pain, being shot through the head with machine-gun fire.... Private Lyall was highly popular, both with his officers and with his comrades. On several occasions when he could have obtained leave, he preferred to stay on with the boys. I may state that the action of your son and his particular party in getting through saved the situation."

As a teacher, his record is that of an excellent young man in every respect, who tried hard to succeed."
