Biography

Lavington Ansley Washington was born in 1896 at Elliston, South Australia. He had fare skin, light brown hair and blue eyes. Lavington’s eyesight was perfect. His height was 152.4 cm (5’ 4.5) and his weight was 52 kg (115 lbs). Lavington’s religion was the Church of England. Before joining the army, Lavington spent his time as a gardener.

Lavington was single when he went to war but when he came back, in the next 47 years before he died, he had 3 wives. His first wife was called Eleanor Elena Washington and his second wife happened to be his ex-wife, Eleanor’s sister. She was called Marjorie Elena Washington who unfortunately passed away at the age of 50 years old in 1954. Doreen Washington was Lavington’s last wife. Lavington passed away married to her and Doreen never got married again. Lavington had no children. Lavington’s next of Kin was his Mother. She was called Mrs Fanny Washington, who lived on First Avenue, Payneham, South Australia. Lavington’s father is unknown.

Lavington’s rank was private and his roll title was 16 infantry Battalion- 7 to 17 and his reinforcement was June 1915 to April 1916. He was involved in World War 1 which was 1914-1918. Lavington was 19 years old when he had his embarkation. The date of the embarkation was the 2nd of December 1915 and it was in Adelaide. His ship embarked on RSM Malwa. Lavington’s regiment number was 3768. He had previous military service before going to war. This military service was serving for 3 months in the 78th infantry Citizen forces. Lavington’s enlistment date was the 3rd of August 1915 and it was in Adelaide, South Australia. His unit name was 16th Battalion 12th reinforcement. Lavington’s AWM embarkation roll number was 23/33/3. His unit from Nominal Roll was 48th Battalion.

He returned to Australia on board HT ‘Karoola’, 16th of October 1916’ and he arrived in Melbourne, 2nd of December 1916, for onward travel to Adelaide. He was discharged from the war because he was medically unfit to be able to continue as a solider as Lavington was wounded, then sent back to war and then got wounded again. He was discharged in Adelaide on the 17th April 1917. The medals that Lavington Ainsley Washington received was a 1914-15 star, British War medal and Victory Medal.

Lavington Ainsley Washington died on the 22nd of August 1964 at the age 68. Lavington was cremated. The place of his burial is the Northern suburbs Crematorium in Sydney.
