'A young man named Eric Armstrong volunteered yesterday and presented himself for medical examination, but owing to his inability to comply with the chest qualification, he had to be rejected. Armstrong is very disappointed at his failure, for he had come all the way from Boulia to Charters Towers, a distance of about 600 miles, to offer his serrows. "I am very sorry," he said, "but I am going to have another try." Such is the spirit of Queensland's manhood.' from The Northern Miner 11 Jan 1916 (nla.gov.au)
