Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Alfred and Mary BROAD; husband of H.B. BROAD "Burraneer", Lawson, New South Wales.

PTE. JOSEPH GIFFORD BROAD, second son of Mr A. Broad, of Wyndham-street, has been killed at the West front. The sad news was received on  Saturday. The deceased soldier, who was 34 yeas of age, enlisted about two yeas ago at Sydney. He married a daughter of Mr Swindells, formerly of  Shepparton, a well known farmer, breeder of horses, and an enthusiast in matters re-lating to trotting.

Member of the Blue Mountains 279 Lodge

The sad news has just come to hand of the death of Signaller Gifford Broad, killed in action (somewhere in France). The deceased young soldier was the second son of Mr. and the late Mrs. Alfred Broad, of Shepparton, Vic., and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. John Swindle, of "Auburn Vale," and brother-in-law of Mrs. P. Rice, "Carlane." He was married to Miss Hannah B. Swindle some seven years ago, when the latter's parents were residents of Gunnedah. The late signaller and his wife resided at Lawson, on the Blue Mountains, prior to enlisting, where he gave freely of his musical talents in the cause of charity. He was of a sunny, congenial disposition, traits which won for him many friends and favors. Together with Dr. Wilson he was tendered a public  and Masonic send-off before leaving Australia. The last cheery epistle received from Signaller Broad was written in his dug-out, 4ft. x 2ft., describing  many exciting adventures; he seemed quite happy in the fact that he was doing his bit, and it was in this spirit he enlisted. Much sympathy is felt for  his young widow and relatives in their great loss. A sister, Miss Ethel Broad, is at present a guest at "Auburn Vale."
