“Lieutenant Robert Stevenson Sword was born on 23 August 1891, the son of Thomas Stevenson and Adele Sword of Carfin, Ascot Brisbane.

Having enlisted at Longreach in the AIF on 21 December 1914 as 893 as Private in the 2nd Light Horse Brigade (4th Reinforcements) he embarked for Egypt on HMAT A15 Star of England on 6 April 1915. Robert Sword served in Gallipoli, then later in France where he transferred to 23 FAB on 21 October 1916.

He then transferred to the 3rd Division Heavy Trench Mortar Battery on 24 August 1917, having been promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 21 June 1917, later Lieutenant on 1 August 1917.

Lt Sword returned to Australia on HMT Euripides, embarking on 30 January 1918.”
