Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School
Samuel Bertram Bridgland was born on November 22nd 1893 in Brisbane, Queensland. He then moved to Mullumbimby, in the Byron Shire of New South Wales. Before enlisting he worked as a Carpenter in his country town. His mother was Marion Gardner Rankine who lived on Station Street in Mullumbimby. His dad was George Bridgland.
At the age of 21 Bridgland enlisted in the 20th Battalion, B company 23 March 1915 as a Private. He embarked on his first military journey from Sydney aboard HMAT A35 Berrima, on the 19 August 1915. His deployment saw him in German New Guinea. He was placed in a wireless station used for communication and we can infer that he was placed there for administration or guarding duties because Australia captured the location the year before. He was discharged 4 March 1915 after returning to Australia. He re-enlisted on 23 Mar 1915 in Sydney, joining the 20th battalion, B company.
He embarked 25 June 1915 and served at Gallipoli. He was hospitalised with an infection for several months and then went AWL in early 1916. Soon after he was hospitalised again. Bridgland and four other soldiers were captured on May 5th 1916 while manning a trench at Bois Grenier. They were taken behind German lines being held as prisoners of war. He was taken to Gefangenlager wahn von etap. He arrrived back in England after the war ended 5th December 1918.
He embarked for Australia 5 April 1919 from England on the ship 'Armagh'. He was discharged 19 July 1919. He also served in WWII as an aircraftman and a repairer.
Bridgland lived a long life after the war, passing away on August 29th 1974 at the age of 80. He passed away in New South Wales and is honoured on the Ballarat Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial.
