James Henry Ralph

James Henry Ralph, son of Arthur and Harriet Ralph, was born at Forest Range in May 1897. He was a labourer and enlisted on the 25th August 1915, nominating his next of kin as his father residing at Streaky Bay on the west coast.
Ralph joined the 1st Machine Gun Battalion and left Adelaide on board RMS Malwa bound for France on the 2nd December 1915.
On the 12th March 1916 he was admitted to the Auxiliary Hospital in Cairo suffering from a mild case of mumps, with his father being informed of his illness on the 21st March. Ralph left Alexandria on the 29th March to join the B.E.F and arrived at Marseilles on the 4th April. While serving in France he was admitted to hospital for a day to receive treatment for a blistered ankle, rejoining his unit in France on the 22nd January 1917. On the 12th February Ralph was admitted to hospital in France with cellulitus {inflammation of the skin} of the right foot. Upon receiving treatment he was granted leave in England and rejoined his unit in France on the 4th March.
On the 1st March 1918 Ralph was appointed Lance Corporal 3rd Machine Gun Company. He was wounded in action in France on the 25th September, suffering a gun-shot wound and compound fracture of his right leg. Ralph was sent to England for the treatment of his injuries, where on the 29th September he was admitted to Craylingwell War Hospital in Chichester. He was transferred to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital at Dartford from where he was discharged to a hospital ship. On the 5th January 1919 he left England for Australia on board Kanowna.
He was discharged as medically unfit on the 14th September 1919.
James Henry Ralph died on the 26th January 1960.
