Private Robert Thomas Grant (Service No:4196) enlisted in the AIF on 10 July 1915 and was attached to 14th Infantry Battalion 13th Reinforcements when he embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Demosthenes A64 on 29 December 1915 bound for Egypt. By 1916 Private Grant was in France, where he was WiA on two occasions - on the first occasion in July he remained on duty and in August he was hospitalised with a GSW. In December 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal, and on 11 April 1917 during the First Battle of Bullecourt, Lance Corporal Grant was captured at Reincourt and transported to Limburg PoW Camp in Germany. Repatriated on 15 December 1918, Lance Corporal Grant embarked from England for Australia on 9 February 1919 on board HT Ascenius. He was Discharged on 18 May 1919.

Born in 1887 in Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, Tom was the sixth of eight children of William Grant Snr (b1850 at Western Port, Victoria) and Betsy McDonald (b1851 in Scotland) - Betsy emigrated with her parents and siblings in 1952, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Marco Polo. William (a Farmer in Bacchus Marsh) and Betsy married in 1978 in Parwon in Moorabool, Victoria and settled in Bacchus Marsh where they raised their family and William was a Farmer.

Tom was a Farmer in Bacchus Marsh and member of the Bacchus Marsh Rifle Club, the Melbourne Rifle Club and local football and cricket clubs. Following WWI, Tom returned to Bacchus Marsh where he was a Farmer. In 1926 he married Emma (Emmie) St Clare Bartley (b1891 in Ballarat, Victoria) - Emmie was a Nurse in Melbourne. Tom and Emmie settled in Bacchus Marsh where Tom was a Farmer. He served with the ACMF (Lieutenant; Service No:V361387) in WWII. Tom died in 1964 and Emmie in 1973.
