James's parents were David McQueen Fraser and Alice Maria Chalk. James attended North Pine State School. James married Sarah Rendell in 1914 at Brisbane. He was working as a cheese maker and living at Clayfield when he enlisted in Toowoomba on 4 December 1915. He embarked on 30 May 1916 from Sydney on board HMAT Persic A34. He returned to Australia.
