Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Born on the twenty sixth of February in the year 1874 in the town of Salter Springs in South Australia, William Henry Thomas Stokes (son of Thomas and Jane Stokes, Husband of Elizabeth Sims and Father of Vera, Ethel, Victor and Mavis Stokes) was a 42 year old gardener/labourer and a soldier who served in World War One. William first embarked on the twelfth of August in the year 1916 from Adelaide aboard the HMAT Ballarat A70 and served in the 32nd infantry battalion as a Private. He served in the field for about six weeks in early 1917 before becoming ill. William Henry Thomas Stokes was discharged on the twenty sixth of November in the year 1917 due to the fact that he had grown medically unfit for battle (not due to misconduct). Before his discharge, William had one year and one hundred and ninety five days of service in total under his belt. On the fifth of September in the year 1961, William Henry Thomas Stokes, aged 87 years, died due to natural causes in Payneham in South Australia.
