Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 20th July 1916, Private Frederick Hillgrove Jackson, 30th Battalion (Reg No-451), labourer and railway fireman from "Swinton", 127 Broadmeadow or Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, was Killed in Action in "No Man's Land" during the Battle of Fromelles, age 25. Cause of death not definitive.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 26th January 1891 to Robert (died 17.6.1928, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 71) and Esther Jackson (died 5.2.1942, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 81) of 130 Hanbury Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., Fred enlisted on the 26th July 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Disembarked Marseilles, France 23.6.1916.
27 days in the field.

Reported Missing in Action 21.7.1916.

Reported Killed in Action 28.7.1916.

His loving comrade (see Link inserted), Gunner Peter Kerr Aitchison (miner from 12 Young Street, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, enlisted 26.7.1915, (30th Battalion, Reg No-348) Newcastle, N.S.W., RTA 1.7.1919, laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 11th October 1926, age 38. PRESBYTERIAN-17SE. 15. Not officially commemorated.

Mr. Jackson’s name has been inscribed on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France. Memorial No 2.

Place of Association – Broadmeadow, New South Wales, Australia.

Fred’s name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Hamilton-Rose of Hamilton Lodge, G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription on the headstone for the Jackson family to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of Fred’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country.
