James Russell THOMAS was living and working as a grocer in Geelong when he enlisted in the AIF on 31st July 1915 in Melbourne.
His NOK was his Mother, Mrs A Thomas of 88 Yarra Street Geelong.
After training he embarked as part of the 8th Battalion reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 October 1915 aboard the HMAT Nestor.
In Egypt he was transferred to the 58th Battalion on 4th April 1916 and left Egypt on 17th June 1916 arriving in France on 23rd June 1916.
On 19th July 1916 the unit took part in the Fromelles battle and James was killed.
His body was recovered and he is buried at the Aubers Ridge British Cemetery, Aubers, France near Fromelles.
James was 17 years old when he was killed.
