Walter Bagnold CRISPE was born in St Peters, South Australia on 14th April, 1895

His parents were Edward CRISPE & Sarah Ann WINGATE

Walter Bagnold Crispe was born on 14th April 1895 in St Peters, South Australia. His parents were Edward Crispe and Sarah Ann Wingate. He was educated at Grange Public School, East Adelaide Public School and St Peter’s College. Prior to the war he worked as a druggist for D & J Fowler and Son.

Walter enlisted in the AIF on the 2nd of August of 1915. He embarked on the 27th of October 1915 on the HMAT Benalla (A24). Walter was originally enlisted in the 10th Battalion but was later transferred to the 27th Battalion. Walter’s served as a lance corporal, his service number was 2622.

Walter was hospitalised in July 1916 with synovitis of the knee. He returned to his unit a couple of weeks later. In October he was admitted to hospital for 4 days with Scabies. In November he was treated for sore feet and was in hospital for over 2 weeks. In late January 1917 he returned to hospital with a septic foot and returned to duty  with the 10th Battalion on 11th February 1917

On the 14th of June 1917 during the battle of Messines, Walter suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was treated in France. Later that year on the 4th of October, he was awarded a Military Medal for his courageous deeds, acts of gallantry and devotion to his duty under the constant pressure of war fire at operations near Louverval.

Walter was wounded and captured by German forces on March 1st, 1918. He was imprisoned at the prisoner of war camp in Dülmen, Germany. He was only set free after the armistice on November 11th and disembarked on the 7th of December, arriving in London on the 9th of December. He returned to Australia on the ship Ascanius disembarking 28th March 1919. He was discharged 20th May 1919 after 3 years and 292 days of service.

Walter died of illness aged 84 in his hometown Grange South Australia 2nd September 1979 and was buried in Centennial Park Cemetery. His services are commemorated in several memorials including the Ballarat Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial, Fremantle D & J Fowler Ltd. Staff, Grange Public School Roll of Honour, Hackney St Peters College Honor Board, Henley Beach Council WW1 Service Roll, Rosewater Women’s Memorial Roll of Honour WW1, and St. Peters East Adelaide Public School Roll of Honour.
