Percival left Adelaide with the 43rd Battalion on board HMAT Afric on 9 June 1916. He was hospitalised twice with scabies and acne while in England in December and rejoined his unit on 11 January 1917. Severe myalgia led to Percy being admitted to the 3rd Auxiliary General Hospital at Brighton in February 1917 and declared fit for duty on 8 May. Percy’s unit went to France on 22 May. He sustained a penetrating chest wound in action and died from his wounds on 4 July 1918. Private Percival Townsend was buried at Daours Communal Cemetery near Corbie in France.
On behalf of Percy, his father received a Victory Medal, Memorial Plaque, Memorial Scroll and a photo of his grave between April 1922 and March 1923.
The Advertiser of Saturday 20 July 1918 carried the following death notice “Percival Seymour Townsend, eldest son of Mr. and the late M.A Townsend of Lameroo , died of wounds.”
