Died on this date – 3rd December…… Frederick John William Marshall was born at North Melbourne, Victoria on 1st December, 1896.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 19th October, 1916 as a 20 year old, single, Clerk (occupation listed as Salesman on information provided by his father for the Roll of Honour) from 49 Northcote Road, Armadale, Victoria.

Driver Frederick John William Marshall, Service number 33307, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 11th May, 1917 with the Field Artillery Brigade – February 1917 Reinforcements. He reported sick while as Sea & was admitted to Ship’s Hospital on 30th June, 1917. Driver Marshall was discharged from Ship’s Hospital on 2nd July, 1917. He disembarked at Plymouth, England on 19th July, 1917.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
He was marched in to R.B.A.A. (Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery) at Larkhill, Wiltshire on 19th July, 1917 from Australia.

On 17th October, 1917 Driver Marshall proceeded overseas to France from Larkhill. He was marched in to A.G.B.D. (Australian General Base Depot) at Rouelles, France on 18th October, 1917.

Driver Marshall was marched out from A.G.B.D. on 21st October, 1917 & was taken on strength of 3rd Field Artillery Brigade on 23rd October, 1917 in Belgium.

Driver Marshall reported sick on 6th February, 1918. He was admitted to 15th Australian Field Ambulance on 6th February, 1918 – cause P.U.O. (Pyrexia (fever) of unknown origin). Driver Marshall was discharged to duty on 10th February, 1918 & rejoined his Unit in France the same day.

He was on Leave to UK from 23rd October, 1918. He became sick on 4th November, 1918 while on Leave & was admitted to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, England on the same day with Influenza.

Driver Frederick John William Marshall died at 06.30 on 3rd December, 1918 at 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield Park, Harefield, Middlesex, England from Primary – Influenza & secondary – Broncho-Pneumonia.

He was buried in St. Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Harefield, Middlesex, England where 112 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
