Vale Lieutenant Donald Robert Jaunay RANR
19/10/1918 – 25/08/2012
Soon after the outbreak of WW2 Bob Jaunay seized the opportunity to join the Navy and he enlisted for RANVR service in the United Kingdom on 20 November 1941.
He embarked for the UK in the “Largs Bay” on 1 December 1941 via the Pacific and Halifax, Canada, finally disembarking in Glasgow on 11 February 1942 then south to HMS Collingwood at Fareham, Hampshire to complete recruit training.
His first posting was to the Destroyer HMS Forester which ran aground while undergoing post refit trials.
Bob’s next posting was the Light Cruiser HMS Argonaut and shortly after joining, the ship was on its way to Murmansk, Russia as one of the Atlantic convoy escorts. These convoys took a terrible pounding from the Luftwaffe and U Boats as well as foul icy weather. Bob’s luck held.
On return to the UK, Bob was commissioned on 5 February 1943 and appointed to HMML 1305 operating out of Gibraltar and Tripoli and Malta.
In late 1944 Bob was appointed to the Escort Carrier HMS Queen and shortly after found himself on his second trip to Murmansk.
Hostilities ceased on 8 May 1945 while on passage back to the UK and not long after Bob was discharged ashore for repatriation to Australia. On return he was appointed as First Lieutenant on HMAS Warrnambool until November 1945 and demobilised in December 1945 after 4 years and 12 days service.
Bob was awarded a Russian Arctic campaign medal by the Russians and much later the British Arctic Star.
Bob joined the Naval, Military and Air Force Club of South Australia on 15 March 1948 and remained an active member until he passed away on 25 August 2012 – a membership of over 64 years. He served as President of the Club from 1969 to 1971.
