Son of Ethelbert Windhan and Edith May (nee Hall) Windham of Glenelg, SA; brother of Kenneth Charles Windham who served in the RAAF, Bardsley Clement Windham who served in the RAAF, and Cassy Blanche Windham

At the time of his death he was serving in HMAS Sydney as a Telegraphist

Ord. Telegraphist Russell Bertram Windham, 21, was employed as a clerk in a city store before he enlisted on January 9, 1940. He was trained at  the Flinders Naval Depot, and joined the Sydney last January. He was educated at the Snowtown and Unley High Schools. He was a son of Mr and  Mrs Ethelbert Windham, of Snowtown, and a twin brother of Miss C. Windham, of Adelaide.
